Episode 048: What We Have Learned in the Pursuit of Education

Parenting Podcast (Archive)

10 Mar
Pursuit of Education

Over the course of raising five very different children, we have explored several different educational options, including neighborhood public schools and a handful of charter schools. For many years, we chased after the best education, playing musical schools in search of the perfect fit. By the time our oldest child was in the seventh grade, he had attended six schools.

In the process of trying a variety of schools that offered different types and qualities of education, we have learned a thing or two that we are excited to share with you. Now that our oldest two kids have started college, we are seeing the results of their educational journies. If we had it to do over again, we might choose a slightly different path, but learning is always a winding road of self-discovery. Today, we are thrilled to share our hard-won experience and perspective with you.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Why we left the neighborhood elementary school in search of a different educational option
  • How we landed in the charter school system, and what we experienced at three different charter schools
  • What is was like to transition to the (massive) neighborhood high school after several years at a tiny charter school
  • Why we feel that the extracurricular options a school has are vital to the overall educational experience (especially in high school)
  • How we discovered that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence
  • Why we feel that education includes much more than academics alone
  • What led us to believe that AP classes are not always worth it
  • Each school comes with its tradeoffs (and some big ones we navigated)
  • Even the best schools have their issues
  • How we learned that there is no right or wrong way to educate your child

When Jesus will return to earth in power and glory

On that great day, as Elder Holland taught, we will “see our Messenger of Salvation descend like “lightning … out of the east,” and we will exclaim, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’

“With arms forever outstretched and love unfeigned, He will reply, ‘I am he.’”

I, for one, cannot wait!

I LOVE food - cooking it, eating it, learning abou I LOVE food - cooking it, eating it, learning about the nutritional benefits

It is my love language

When I decided to go *mostly* plant-based a few years ago (check out the podcast this week to learn about that), I needed all the help I could get

Here are a few of my favorite resources that have helped me along my nutrition journey

Not all are entirely plant-based, but all are nutritionally sound

P.S. I am VERY picky about who I listen to in the world of nutrition because social media has perpetuated all sorts of confusion around what is actually nutritious.

These are all sources I trust ☺️
I never expected a couple of lines in my patriarch I never expected a couple of lines in my patriarchal blessing to send me down a rabbit hole of nutrition research and plant-based cooking

But here we are

This week’s episode of Stand with Lynnette is a little different!

We’re talking about food, faith, the Word of Wisdom, and why I’ve become a big believer in putting more plants on my plate

No vegetarian conversion attempts, I promise 😉
